December Newsletter 2014

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the December Newsletter, rather dark and dull over here in Vouvant at the moment but it’s warm and cosy in the cafe and we have all the Christmas decorations up to chase away the December blues.

To help cheer you we have the “Leffe de Noel” an amazing dark spicy Christmas beer and of course from this weekend we also have our warming Vin Chaud, full of orangey spices and a little tot of brandy ….. Sure to warm the cockles of your heart!

We had a fabulous weekend with the Christmas Fair, it was held in the Place du Bail and the car park opposite the cafe. This year there were many more stalls and they were arranged inside marquees around the car park – even the slight shower on Saturday evening didn’t put people off. There are many more Christmas fairs happening around the area and they are advertised in the Deux Sevres magazine and the Living magazine, copies of which are available from us here in the cafe.

We have a good selection of Christmas cards in the cafe too, both Phoenix cards and handmade cards from Tina. Also for those of you looking for Christmas gifts we have a lovely selection of hand turned wooden bowls from Richard Edler based here in the village. Richard can also undertake commissions for items too, details are available here in the cafe.

Speaking of Christmas, we will be holding our Christmas Quiz on FRIDAY 19th December at 7.30pm. The menu will be our take on traditional Christmas lunch – soup starter, stuffed chicken breast wrapped in streaky bacon, roast potatoes, vegetables and pigs in blankets (a vegetarian meal option will be available), then individual Christmas pudding with cream or ice cream, followed by a little local digestif. There will be some fabulous prizes as well as a gift and Christmas crackers for everyone! As usual the tables for four will be on a first come first served basis – payment (15euros per person) and booking to Paul please.

On Sunday 21st December we will be holding our annual Christmas Carol sing-a-long. You are invited to join us from 7.00pm onwards for Christmas Carols in both French and English, and complimentary nibbles. As usual we will be led in the singing by Jackie with her tuning pipes and Karen will be helping out with a plate of mince pies to get you all in tune! Why not come along and join in the fun?

We will be taking a short break at the beginning of December to visit the UK so will be closed from Monday 8th December through to Thursday 11th December. We will re-open on Friday 12th December as usual.

Our opening hours over the holiday period are as follows:
Wednesday 24th December – Christmas Eve – open usual from 11h00 to 18h00.
Thursday 25th December – Christmas Day – open from 11h00 to 14h00.
Friday 26th December – Boxing Day – closed
Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th December – open as usual from 11h00 to 18h00.
Monday 29th December to Friday 2nd January 2015 – closed
Saturday 3rd January 2015 – open as usual

And finally, in January we will be joining forces with two lovely ladies from Scotland who will be hosting a Burns Night here in the cafe on Saturday 17th January. We will be offering a four course Burns night supper – full menu to follow – (vegetarian option too of course). We will be integrating our quiz night into the evening so look out for further details in our January newsletter. In the meantime if you wish to get in early and reserve some places a deposit will secure a table for you – have a chat with Paul next time you are in the cafe.

Ok folks, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope to see you in the cafe and Vouvant soon,

November Newsletter 2014

Hello everyone

Welcome to November! Gusty winds and rain started the month, let’s hope that it isn’t going to continue that way….. There are a few things happening this month so here we go…

The memorial service on the Monday 11th November will be held from 10.00am in the Place de la Mairie in Vouvant. The cafe will be open from 9.30am for coffee and croissants prior to the service and then again after for about and hour for drinks only. We have poppies and poppy car stickers in the cafe if you would like to make a contribution to the poppy appeal.

There will be a Jazz Evening at the Salle du Prieure in Foussais-Payre on Saturday the 15th November from 8.30pm. Tickets are 8 Euros each and more information can be obtained by contacting the F-P Association Culturelle on their email at or by phone on 02 51 51 40 18.

The English film “Pride” will be shown on Thursday November 28th at the Cinema Salle Belle Epine in La Chataignerie. The film is inspired by an extraordinary true story. It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families. Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person. As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all. Doors open at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8.00pm.

Our November quiz will be held on Saturday November 29th at 7.30pm. The meal this month will be Spanish Chicken with rice (vegetarian chilli also available), with an ice cream dessert after. Tables should be booked and paid for with Paul – tables of four please, on a first come first served basis. Lots of lovely prizes so hope to see you there, it is always fun as we don’t take ourselves too seriously!

The Vouvant Christmas Market will be held on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November in the Place du Bail, under the tower at the top of the car park opposite the cafe. Many of our local craftspeople will have stalls as well as local producers such as the Duck Farm at the top of the village. Saturday will start from 3.00pm and Sunday will open from 10.00am. Father Christmas will be making his rounds during both days and there will also be donkey rides for the kids and folk dancing displays and singing from the choir on Sunday afternoon. Come along and join us for a hot chocolate or coffee and a mince pie – we look forward to seeing you….

Ok folks, that’s all for now. Don’t forget we are open for meals on a Friday evening, we offer either a two or three course meal, often with special main courses just available that evening. Booking is always advisable so that we can ensure you a table.

Hope to see you soon in the cafe,
Kind regards
