Happy New Year Everyone!
Very best wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2014 to each and everyone. We
had a lovely Christmas and New Year and hope you all did too.
Hopefully, those of you in the UK, have weathered the storms and are
prepared for those to come – let’s hope we all get through them
without too many problems.
Well you may have noticed on the Cafe Facebook page that we have a new
uniform for this year – I was lucky enough to receive a great present
from Paul – an Eeyore “onesie” – lovely and warm on these cold winter
evenings when you are sitting in front of the telly, but I am not
going to be wearing it in the cafe, honest…..!
So what have we got happening this month for you? Read on for all the details:
Saturday January 4th – From 2.30pm until 4.30pm Paperback Jan will be
here with her stock of new and used paperbacks for you to browse
through and find something for those winter evenings on the sofa in
front of the fire. A book, I mean, to go with those Christmas
choccies! And don’t forget that if you have any books that you have
read you can bring these along and Jan will take these from you for a
As well as Jan being in the cafe on Saturday afternoon, Leonie will
also be here with a selection from the Neal’s Yard range of natural
cosmetics and skin products. All items will range in price from about
6 euros and will be available to take away on the day. Leonie will
also have her catalogues here so if you do wish to order any other
items she will be able to place your order for you.
Many of you will have met Abbey in the cafe over the past month or so.
Abbey is a qualified Yoga instructor and is holding group or private
classes in her studio in Vouvant at the foot of the Melusine Tower.
Abbey will also be featured in the Deux-Sevres magazine each month
giving tips on how to enjoy yoga and relaxation. I know that I for
one will be reading her page with interest and hopefully some time to
join one of her classes too. Have a look at Abbey’s website
www.thevenusyogaexperience.com for further retails and contact
As some of you may know unfortunately the Vendee magazine is no longer
in circulation, however we do still have the Deux-Sevres magazine each
month and the Living magazine every two months. Both of these
magazines give loads of information on what is happening in the local
area and on services and local tradesmen, and make very interesting
reading with lots of articles from local people.
Amanda Johnson was one of the monthly contributors to the Vendee
magazine, giving information on French finance and tax. Amanda has
offered to visit the cafe on the last Thursday of each month to answer
any questions you may have. You can either just come along to the cafe
any time between 11.00am and 3.00pm on Thursday 30th January, or you
can give her a call or drop her an email to make a specific
appointment during her time here in the cafe. Her contact details are

The Christmas quiz went really well and I cannot believe that we found
so many questions all related to Christmas – don’t worry we won’t do
it again – well not until next year anyway! This month’s quiz will be
on Saturday the 25th January and again you can make your booking with
Paul. The price for the ticket is 10 euros per person including the
meal, which this month will be Pork Forestiere with creamed potatoes
and vegetables, with an ice cream dessert. (We would like to have your
ticket money when you book your table please).
The Christmas Carol singing also went really well and we were all in
good voice. Thanks again to Jackie who kept us all in tune and to
Shirley who ably sang alongside and of course to everyone who came
along and joined in. The cafe was packed with both English and French
visitors and as Jackie had prepared the song sheets in both languages
we were all able to sing along.
We will be taking our annual leave in February which means that the
cafe will be closed from Friday January 31st until we re-open on
Wednesday 12th March. This is not just our holiday time, we will also
be refreshing the cafe with a new coat of paint and tidying up the
courtyard ready for the spring.
Just one more item – we have heard rumors that we are packing up and
selling the cafe and moving back to the UK. This is NOT true! We are
not moving back to the UK – we have bought a property that our family
will be using when they come to visit us and that we will eventually
move into when we retire. We have put the cafe on the market but as
most of you must know it can often take over a year to sell property
in France, particularly when it is a prosperous business like ours!
It has always been our plan to work for five years and then to retire
and have our home in France, so this is just the fulfillment of our
Ok folks so that is it for now, don’t forget to book your table for
the quiz, and hope to see you in the cafe soon,
Paul and Karen
