Monthly Archives: February 2013

1 February 2013

Hi Folks,

The Newsletter is a little earlier than usual this month as we will be closed for February. As previously mentioned, we are having some work done on the cafe and we will be taking a break to get away from the gloomy February weather. We will close from Monday 4th February and will re-open on Wednesday 6th March. We will be back though – you can’t get rid of us that easy!

We won’t be doing absolutely nothing on our break – the time off gives us a chance to take on board the comments you have made about our menus and drink selections and to plan our Summer Menu and make any changes so that we can continue to give our customers the best service we can.

Before we get onto the action for March, here are a couple of newsworthy items:

Cafe wins “Premiere Prix” for our courtyard flowers!
We are so very proud of our award – a beautiful white painted ornamental watering can jam-packed full of pretty narcissus, and a certificate to prove how hard we worked. We shall have to try hard again this year to keep up to the level we have achieved this year!

Cinema in La Chataigneraie – the English film to be shown on Thursday 21st February is the new James Bond film “Skyfall”. We will miss it this time but would encourage everyone to support this event as it is manned by volunteers and of course the more who attend the more it will ensure it will continue. You can also suggest films to be shown at the forthcoming evenings, just have a word with one of the organisers. Enjoy the film – but don’t tell us the ending!!

Advertise your business here in the cafe – As most of you will know we hold a file in the cafe containing details of services offered, such as building services, cleaning, painting and decorating etc. If you are an artisan or have a genuine business with a siret number and would like to advertise, then pop in a card or flyer/leaflet and we would be pleased to add your information to our folder.

Calling all Artists and Craftsmen/women – We are looking for anyone who would like to display their artwork or craft in the cafe. At the moment we have a display of artwork by the local amateur art group but this will be taken down when we go on holiday so will be looking for items to replace these when we return in March. If you are interested please let us know and we will make arrangements with you.

Beautiful wood! – we have some beautifully crafted pieces on display in the cafe including candlesticks, nut and snack bowls and larger salad bowls. All these items are made by local craftsman Richard Edler in his workshop in the village. Richard is willing to take on commissions for small items and is often in the cafe and will happily tell you about the pieces he has made. They are very reasonably priced and make lovely unique gifts. Come along and take a look….

OK folks let’s tell you about some of the items that we have planned for March:

Paperback Jan – Wednesday 6th March:
Please note that Paperback Jan will NOT be visiting us in February but will be with us on our first day of re-opening on the 6th March. Jan has a large selection of old and newly released paperbacks on offer together with a selection of DVDs. Come along into the cafe and have a coffee, tea or a beer or wine, whilst you browse her collection. Jan is with us from 2.30 to 4.30pm.

Monday 11th March from 7.00pm – French Tax Returns and Financial Planning in France for expats – a presentation and general discussion by David Nicholls from the deVere Group and Valerie Patard – “Val-Assist”.
We are really pleased that we can offer this evening session with David and Val covering the main topics of French Tax Returns and Financial planning for those of you who live in France. The French tax laws are different to those in the UK and change so often it is sometimes difficult to keep up to date with what expats are due or liable for. And, with recent changes to UK Pensions and Pension Law you may be able to manage your finances differently to make life a little easier for you. There is no obligation to “sign up” for anything and there is no charge to attend. All we would ask is that if you would like to come along please let us know as places are limited. Following is the agenda for the evening:

“Come and understand Tax returns and Financial Planning in France”

7;00 – Welcome to the event
7:15 – Presentation – deVere and effective financial planning living as an expat in France – David Nicholls
7:40 – Question and Answers
8:00 – Summary of French Tax – David Nicholls
8;10 – Question and Answers with Val Assist on French Tax Returns
8:30 – Individual questions as required.

Friday Late-Night Opening Special – Friday 22nd March – Jewelry Evening
Every Friday evening we extend our opening time until around 10.00pm. We also try to offer something different to entice you out of your warm sitting rooms and into the cafe. Apart from our usual range of wines, beers and hot and cold soft drinks, we also offer our full menu. If you would like to join us on a Friday evening for a meal it is always a good idea to book a table, just give us a quick call and we can confirm your reservation. On Friday the 22nd March, John and Leone Henstridge will be bringing their collection of beautiful jewelry into the cafe. All items are reasonably priced and are ideal for Birthday or Anniversary gifts, or for a treat for yourself. We look forward to seeing you.

Chocolate Workshop – Tuesday 26th March at Foussais-Payre:
The Chocolatier in Foussais runs Chocolate workshops every now and then and there are a couple of places left on the March workshop. It starts at 2.00pm in Foussais and you learn all about making chocolate and are able to take away what you make……Mmmmm can’t wait. The price is 8 euros a person and you can give me a call for further details if you are interested.

Well that is it for now until we return after our break. We hope you all have a good February and look forward to seeing you in the cafe again when we re-open in March,
